APD Arrays for Scintillating Fiber Readout
نویسندگان
چکیده
An investigation is underway to determine the feasibility of planar processed, high gain, silicon avalanche photodiode arrays as a readout mechanism for scintillating fibers (SCIFI). Avalanche photodiode (APD) arrays are a compact and rugged alternative to photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Since SCIFI usually yield a small number of photons compared with bulk scintillators, one goal of this investigation was to determine the photon detection threshold of the APD arrays. A Monte Carlo code was used to simulate a minimum ionizing particle (MIP) interacting with the fiber. The number of photons produced that reach the fiber ends from a MIP was calculated to be between 40-70 photons. The number of photons that reach the fiber ends is dependent on where the MIP interacts along the fiber length, the attenuation length of the fiber, and the fiber length. The next step was to determine the photon detection threshold of an APD array when cooled to -35" C. This was accomplished by using a pulsed LED and a 90Sr beta source. The experimental data show that our APD arrays have a detection efficiency of nearly 100% for photon pulses of >30 photons at a wavelength of 492nm.

A prototype avalanche photodiode array for scintillating-fiber tracking detectors
We have evaluated the performance of a prototype 16-channel avalanche photodiode (APD) array developed primarily for scintillating-fiber (SCIFI) tracking detectors. The APD array was coupled to a 2.5 m long SCIFI array, and the detection efficiency was measured for minimum ionizing particles passing through the SCIFI array. The APD array was cooled to −50◦C to improve the S/N ratio. We have fou...

A silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array has been developed at FBK-irst [1] having 32 channels and a dimension of 8.0× 1.1 mm. Each 250 μm wide channel is subdivided into 5×22 rectangularly arranged pixels. These sensors are developed to read out a modular high resolution scintillating fiber tracker. Key properties like breakdown voltage, gain and photon detection efficiency (PDE) are found to be...
متن کاملDesign criteria for multi-layered scintillating fibre arrays with inclined columns
Multi-layered scintillating fibre arrays read-out are commonly used as high resolution charged particle hodoscopes. Fibres of a “column” along the geometrical trajectory of incident particles are typically grouped to one pixel of a multi-channel read-out device. In some applications the incident particles will cross the detection plane with large angles w.r.t. the normal to the layers. Then, th...

The application of reach-through avalanche photodiodes (R’APD) as a photodetector for scintillator tiles has been investigated. The light collected by WLS fibers (0.84mm and 1mm diameter) embedded in the scintillator has been transmited to the 0.5mm active surface of APD by clear optical fibers and optical connectors. A low noise charge sensitive preamplifier (≈ 400e− equivalent noise charge) h...
